Reaching Out Final Essay
Objective: To write an essay about how a character must adjust to life in a new environment.
Writing Prompt: In Reaching Out, Francisco Jimenez must adjust to life in a new environment when he leaves home to attend college at the University of Santa Clara. In a well-developed essay, describe how Francisco adjusts to his new life as a college student, and explain how his adjustment relates to the work as a whole.

Essay Structure:


Introduction

- Introduces the text

3 Body Paragraphs

- Provide textual evidence (quotes) to support thesis statement

- Analyze textual evidence and explain its significance to thesis statement

- Restate how Francisco’s adjustment relates to the work as a whole








An effective essay should include:
- A clear thesis statement that responds to the writing prompt
- Five perfect paragraphs (refer to your notes on the perfect paragraph)
- Effective topic sentences at the beginning of each body paragraph
- Effective concluding / linking sentences at the end of each body paragraph

An effective essay should include (continued):
- At least 3 direct quotes from the text
- At least 3 SAT Vocabulary Words

- MLA format (see agenda book for guidelines)


- An original title that relates to the content of your essay

Writing Process

Use the stages of the writing process to develop an effective essay:


Prewriting, Drafting, Revising & Editing, and Publishing (page 17 in textbook)

Rough Draft: Tuesday, October 25th
Second Draft: Monday, October 31st
Final Draft: Friday, November 4th
* Students will be given one class period in the computer lab on Friday, October 28th to work on their essays.




Final Product Turn-In:

The rubric, all drafts, and all writing associated with this essay assignment must be turned in with the final draft in order to receive full credit.
