NORAM1506: American Civilization, an Introduction

You are allowed to use an English–English dictionary.
The questions must be answered in English.
The answers must be written on copy-sheets.
Answer ONE QUESTION in Part A and the question in Part B. DO NOT REPEAT the same information, themes or examples in both parts of the exam.
Part A: (ca. 60%) All students must answer ONE ESSAY question of the following three. Label your answer with the number of the essay you choose.
1. On August 9, 2014 Michael Brown, an 18-year old black male, was fatally shot by a white Ferguson police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. The disputed circumstances of the shooting and the resultant protests and civil unrest have received considerable attention in the U.S. and abroad. Discuss this incident in relation to at least three dimensions of American culture and society such as minorities, ethnicity, class, politics, the media and so on. Include a historical perspective and specific examples.

2. Give a definition of “localism” and “federalism” as those terms can be applied to the United States and explain with specific examples from different periods of time how these fundamental ideas (values, systems) have influenced three different dimensions of American life.

3. Multiculturalism is a central aspect of US society as the American population is very diverse and is made up of a great number of ethnic groups. Yet the United States is one of the most unified nations in the world. Discuss this seemingly contradictory statement, identifying the constituents of the American national ideology (“Americanism”) and explaining why it has been (and still is) an important aspect of American life.
Part B (ca. 40%): Answer the following. TAKE CARE not to repeat material from Part A.
