Internship Program

Thanks to the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, Illinois Wesleyan will offer up to 38 awards for internships in Asia to qualified students in summer 2017. Support includes airfare, summer housing, living allowance, visa fees and all internship placement costs. Students awarded internship support commit to documenting and sharing their internship experience during and after participation. Click here for more information about internship opportunities.
Eligibility
Applicants must be


  • Domestic or international students enrolled full-time at IWU. International students may apply for positions that are NOT in their home country

  • Of good academic standing: 3.0 cumulative GPA (petition to waive the GPA requirement available; contact Dr. Amoloza – tamoloza@iwu.edu - for details)


Selection Criteria
Applications will be evaluated by the IWU Freeman Asia Internship Selection Committee. Recipients will be selected on the basis of their essays that demonstrate understanding of anticipated internship placement, the demonstrated value of the internship to the students' course of study or post-graduation plans and articulation of suitability for internship experience in Asia.
Application Packet
Complete IWU Freeman Asia Internship Program applications must include the following:
Completed Application Form including two (2) required essays

Resumé



Please e-mail completed application form, essays and resumé to Laurie Diekhoff at diekhoff@iwu.edu.

Additionally, students need to solicit the following:



Letter of support from an IWU faculty member (one page) indicating the student’s suitability to participate in the IWU Freeman Asia Internship program.

Faculty writing support letter should send the letter directly to Laurie Diekhoff at the Hart Career Center or via email at diekhoff@iwu.edu by the January 30th deadline.
Recipients of IWU Freeman Asia Internship award are required to document and share their internship experiences with the wider IWU community. Creativity is encouraged. Sharing must be completed within one semester of the return to IWU. For example, a student might:


  • Keep a blog linked to the IWU website – this is required.

  • Create several digital stories that can be posted on the IWU website (optional)

  • Upon return, present in class or at some other university forum about the internship experience (required)


Timetable

  • January 30, 2017 – application deadline

  • February 8, 2017 – notification of selected students

  • February 13, 2017 – deadline for acceptance of award

  • February 17, 2017 – selected students submit documents required by internship site

  • February 24 – March 20, 2017 – Video interviews with sites that require this

  • March 31, 2017 – confirmation of internship placement

Immediately thereafter, selected students should have passport ready to work with Dr. Amoloza to obtain the proper visa. Students should also start correspondence with internship supervisor in Asia.

  • April 14, 2017 – internship contract due

  • April 2, 2017 (Sunday) – mandatory pre-departure orientation session (tentative date)

  • April 23, 2017 (Sunday) – mandatory internship site specific orientation
