Materials and Methodology:

Site of Project: Ashraya Seva Trust, a charitable old age home located in Rajajinagar, Bangalore.
Type of Study: Cross-sectional.
Period of Project: From 15 February 2020 to 25 March 2020.
Sample Size and Population: All the 52 residents of the old age home were administered a questionnaire and their answers were recorded by the interviewer.
Inclusion criteria:
Patients above the age of 65 years were included in this study.
Patients who have given informed consent.
Patients with no apparent cognitive decline.
Exclusion criteria:
Patients below the age of 65 years.
Patients with problems in understanding or speaking.
Patients who refused to give consent.
Details of ethics approval/consent:
Approval for the study was taken from the administration and written and consent was taken from the patients at the time of the interview.
Materials/Apparatus/Questionnaires used to collect data:
Criteria for diagnosis of constipation:
Rome IV criteria for the diagnosis of constipation was used:
Patient must have experienced at least two of the following symptoms over the preceding three months:

Fewer than three spontaneous bowel movements per week
Straining for more than 25% of defecation attempts
Lumpy or hard stools for at least 25% of defecation attempts
Sensation of anorectal obstruction or blockage for at least 25% of defecation attempts
Sensation of incomplete defecation for at least 25% of defecation attempts
Manual maneuvering required to defecate for at least 25% of defecation attempts

Bristol stool chart was used to classify stool:

Type 1: Hard and separate little lumps that look like nuts and are hard to pass
Type 2: Log-shaped but lumpy
Type 3: Log-shaped with some cracks on the surface
Type 4: Smooth and snake-like
Type 5: Small, like the first ones, but soft and easy to pass. The blobs also have clear cut edges.
Type 6: Fluffy and mushy with ragged edges.
Type 7: Completely watery with no solid pieces.
