COMPARE & CONTRAST ESSAY TOPICS – IELTS EXAM – WRITING TASK TWO

COMPARING APPROACHES OR METHODS

In this type of essay the advantages and disadvantages of two approaches, methods are discussed and compared. Complete the notes below. Remember to write in paragraphs. Write between 220 and 250 words. Remember, compare BOTH SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES.

QUESTION: DESCRIBE TWO TECHNIQUES FOR DOING SOMETHING, EITHER IN YOUR WORK OR YOUR HOBBY

Paragraph One – Introduction

What are you going to discuss in this essay?

I’m going to compare learning the piano from the internet with learning it with a teacher.

What is the context, background of this topic?

I’ve been playing the piano for many years; I had lessons in classical piano when I was at school, but didn’t enjoy the way I was taught. For the last five years or so I’ve been teaching myself to play via lessons on the internet. I will task the relative merits and drawback of having a teacher versus learning alone using the internet.

Paragraph Two – Reason for supporting A

What is / are the reasons for supporting Approach, Method A

Having piano lessons taught by a teacher is the way most school children learn to play this instrument. An advantage of this method are that the teacher can see the progress the child is making and can help him by guiding him in the right direction by helping him correct his mistakes and giving him suitable exercises to improve where he needs to. Another advantage is that the learner knows that he’s being guided in the right direction and this improves his confidence.

Paragraph Three – Reasons for not supporting A

What is / are the reasons for not supporting Approach, Method A?

However, everything depends on the teacher, especially for a child, if the teacher is positive, teaches the right things and encourages the child in his playing that is beneficial. On the other hand, if the teacher’s way of teaching does not agree with the pupil’s style of learning or if the child is being made to play tunes he doesn’t like, then, that can be very de-motivating for the learner and he can become disillusioned, bored and even give up playing because of his teacher! I wonder how many students have had this experience being taught a musical instrument at school.

Paragraph Four – Reasons for supporting B

What is / are the reasons for supporting Approach, Method B or the second thing?

On the other hand, learning to play the piano has several advantages over using a teacher. First, it’s a lot cheaper; you pay once for an online course, some are even free. With a teacher, you pay for each and every lesson and if the teacher comes to your home, he’ll probably charge you for his travel expenses also. Furthermore, with an online course you can study when you want and as long as you want without paying more.

Paragraph Five – Reasons for not supporting B

What is / are the reasons for not supporting Approach, Method B or the second thing?

However, there are some drawbacks to learning piano on the internet. One, you don’t have a teacher to explain to something to you that you don’t understand. Two, an internet course can’t teach you as much as a good teacher can, to learn more, you usually have to pay to download another course from the internet.

Paragraph Six – Conclusion

Which approach, method or thing would you choose? Why? Why not?

To sum up, whether you choose a teacher or an internet course depends on what you prefer, your individual circumstances and what you want to achieve.
