ASSIGNMENT No. 1
Q.1 What are the salient features of communicative writing? Discuss in detail. (20)
Q.2 Explain the roles of ‘Grammatical Groups’ and “Sense Groups” in language learning. (20)
Q.3 Make comparison between the following concepts with the help of examples. (20)

i) Acquisition vs Learning

ii) Fluency vs Accuracy

iii) Encoding vs Decoding

iv) Productive Skills vs Receptive Skills
Q.4 Distinguish between active & passive vocabulary. Enlist the main problems encountered by vocabulary learners. Also formulate suitable criteria for choosing vocabulary items to be learnt. (20)
Q.5 Compositions can be assessed by either ‘impression marking’ or ‘analytic marking’. Discuss in detail with examples. (20)
ASSIGNMENT No. 2
The 2nd assignment is a project. You are required to study the relevant area/conduct research and prepare a brief report on your findings in the given area. You will then have to submit one copy of the report to the tutor within the scheduled period and at the same time present the report/essay in the 2nd Assignment Presentation Workshop (the schedule/plan of the Presentations Workshop will be intimated by the tutor concerned or the Regional Director). The compulsory presentation carries 100 marks: 40 marks for the written report/essay and 60 for the presentation, and passing both components scoring 16 and 24 marks respectively is mandatory.
A few guidelines for the presentation and the written report:
a) The written report should have an introduction, body and conclusion. It should be written in correct, clear and concise English.

b) It should be 5-8 double spaced typed/handwritten pages.

c) The presentation will be assess and evaluated mainly in:

i. Contents of the assignment/report

ii. Communication skills

iii. Language accuracy

iv. Language fluency

v. Presentation style


You will prepare your project on one of the following topics. Your tutor will assign different topics to different students during your classes. For example, if the number of students in your class in 15, one topic may not be assigned to more than five students.
1. Design a lesson plan for developing writing skills with the help of using pictures and diagrams. Keep in mind the three stages of developing writing skills, that is, controlled writing, guided writing and free writing. Implement the lesson plan in your classroom. Get feedback from the student regarding how they found the pictures and diagrams helpful for developing writing skills. Analyse the feedback/students’ response to comment on the effectiveness of the use of pictures and diagrams in developing writing skills.
2. Select any five pieces of authentic material from a newspaper. Design a lesson plan based on them to be used for teaching Reading Skills. After implementing the lesson plan, conduct a test to see how far your lesson plan has been effective. Write report on how authentic material can be used effectively for developing reading skills. Attach the material used, lesson plan and the test you conducted, with your assignment/report.
