Gwaii Trust Travel Assistant Program

What types of travel does the TAP program assist?
Travel for individuals or groups that are for cultural, arts, sports and senior related events. Essentially, a trip whose objective is related to any of the above categories and or contains an educational component relevant to the participants will be considered.

Individual Travel Assistance
Gwaii Trust is a match funding program to assist individuals for off-island travel for up to $250.00 per trip. Each individual is eligible for two (2) trips per year. 

Group Travel Assistance Program
Gwaii Trust is a match funding program to assist individuals for off-island travel for up to $4,000.00 per trip. Each group is eligible for two (2) trips per year and must provide 10% sweat equity.

Youth Individual Travel
Gwaii Trust Society supports our Island youth traveling and has a policy where the youth are not limited to the 2 trips a year. Gwaii Trust defines a youth as any individual 18 years or younger.

All Youth are still required to complete their final accounting and report before any future funding is considered.



Youth Group Travel
Gwaii Trust Society supports our Island youth traveling and has a policy where the youth are not limited to the 2 trips a year.

Recognized Youth groups are eligible for on-island travel. It is the same criteria as off-island travel.



Groups are still required to complete their final accounting and report before any future funding is considered.

School Group
Student group travel for school events will be permitted outside the parameters of this policy with the following additional requirements: No restriction on the number of travel times per students. The maximum per group is $4,000.00

My employer is paying my expenses for my trip, am I still eligible for the TAP program?
No, TAP is an out-of-pocket program that matches funds that you pay for your trips. If your employer is paying for expenses and registration, TAP will not be approved.

I took my trip last week and I didn't’t know about the TAP program, can I still apply?
No, applications will not be approved for trips that were taken already. No exceptions.

What documents do I need to be sent in with the applications?

  • Cost quotes of accommodations and travel (only quotes included in the application will be considered in the budget); 

  • confirmation of registration or formal invitation to the event; 

  • essay of “goal to achieve on the travel trip”, photos; 

  • detailed budget of out-of-pocket expenses, proof of payment; 

  • Itinerary of trip from departure date to return date and complete application.

My Continued Education application was approved to attend post-secondary of island; can I apply for TAP as well ?
Yes, 
with exception to the education program “Continued Education grant” only.

When do I fill out a Direct Deposit slip?
Once your application has been approved, you will be notified by the project office and will be forwarded a form to fill out then, one you have filled it out you have to email it back to the project officer. 

I didn't get my application in within 14 days prior deadline, can it be processed?

  • As outlined in our guidelines, applicants are encouraged to apply 14 days prior to travel departure. All applications:

  • Received greater than 14 days before departure date if approved, will be funded prior to departure, subject to the confirmation of paid receipts;

  • Received less than 14 days, but greater than 7 days prior to departure date, if approved, will be paid upon return from travel, subject to the confirmation of paid receipts; 

  • Received less than 7 days before departure date, will not be eligible for any travel funding. 

  • Received after departure date, will not be eligible for any travel funding.

I want to travel with a group, what are the rules for the number of trips approved per year? 
2 trips per year are approved. If you traveled once, your application will be approved. If you have traveled 2 times this fiscal year, your name will be removed from the group when processing.

What are considered matching funds? 
Matching funds means the Gwaii Trust Society is willing to pay 50% of the costs you incur for your trip. The maximum funding per trip is $250 per individual or $4,000 per group.

How many trips are funded per fiscal year? 
Two trips for adults, however there are no limits for youth. For the purposes of this program Gwaii Trust defines “youth” as those aged from 2-18. A final trip report must be completed prior to any future funding through this program.

My arts application was approved to attend a work shop; can I apply for TAP as well? 
No, Gwaii Trust allows for support of one application per project; funding from 2 programs related to one project is not permitted. 

When will I find out when my application is approved? 
Generally, applications take 7 days to process. You should hear from our offices within 7 days of your application submission date, if, for some reason you do not hear from us within 7 days we encourage applicants to contact their nearest Gwaii Trust office. 

Can approved funds be directly deposited into my local Credit Union account?
Absolutely! We encourage all applications to include their banking account information so that we may automatically deposit your approved funds directly once your application has been approved. 

Applications missing any of the above noted information will be consider incomplete, and as such the application will be set aside until all documentation has been received. The application will not be considered “received” until all requested information has been received either electronically, by facsimile, or by hard copy delivered to either of our Gwaii Trust offices. 



What kind of travel purposes qualify for the Gwaii Trust Travel Assistance Program (TAP)?
Travel for individuals or groups that are for group cultural, arts, sports, senior and educational related events. Essentially, a trip whose objective is related to any of the above categories will be considered.  What will not be considered are trips for medical travel, or trips that have a recreational / entertainment component IE vacations.

What expenses are not eligible for reimbursement under the Gwaii Trust TAP? 
Travel expenses relating only specifically to the actual travel portion of the trip using mass transit (Bus, ferry, airlines, and trains) will be considered.  Things such as food, gas, and accommodation are not eligible for reimbursement.

My employer is paying for my expenses for my trip, am I still eligible for the TAP program? 
No, TAP is an out-of-pocket program that matches funds that you pay for your trips. If your employer is paying for expenses and registration, your TAP application will not be approved.
