Is the IB Diploma right for me?

    • Workload
    • Credit from UC’s and other universities
    • School grades vs. IB grades
    • Remind you why you chose IB
    • http://blogs.ibo.org/ibtv/?p=433

Workload

    • LOTS! Especially as you begin to work on your Applications for Colleges and your Internal Assessment’s.
    • Budget your time wisely and make sure all Internal Assessments are completed on time.
    • Complete your CAS requirements (due April 22, 2016)
    • Finalize your Extended Essays (due November 16, 2015)
    • There is nothing that says you must stay a full diploma candidate

IB Credit at UC

  • Students who complete the IB diploma with a score of 30 or above will receive 30 quarter (20 semester) units toward their UC degree. Students who receive IB certificates with scores of 5,6 or 7 on Higher Level exams will receive 8 quarter (5.3 semester) units.
  • Designated examinations may be considered equivalent to UC freshman-level courses in the subject and may be used to satisfy general education or breadth requirements. Students or counselors should contact individual campuses for more information on how subject credit may be granted.
  • The units granted for IB exams are not counted toward the maximum number of credits required for declaration of a major or the maximum number of units a student may accumulate prior to graduation. Students who enter the UC with IB credit do not have to declare a major earlier than other students, nor are they required to graduate earlier.
  • Duplication with college courses
  • Students should be advised that college courses taken before or after attending UC may duplicate IB examinations. If the student does duplicate an exam with a college course or vice versa, we will award credit for only one. (example Calculus)

Grades

  • IB subject grades are
  • determined by IB and are
  • based on:
  • Internal Assessment (teacher moderated)
  • External Assessment (IB examiner graded)
  • 1-7 point scale
  • TOK
  • CAS
  • Extended Essay
  • Class grades
  • Based on Teacher grading guidelines and may be different than AP or IB grades
  • Include all required student work and exams and on time completion of required IB internal assessments. (detentions will be given)
  • Class grades do not change based on IB/AP grade received
  • Included in determination of Diploma
  • Anything not completed may result in a student not receiving a certificate for that subject and possibly the loss of the opportunity to receive the diploma. No refunds will be given for students’ failure to comply.

TOK (Theory of Knowledge) Requirement

  • TOK curriculum began end of last year, completed first semester this year. TOK paper due to IB by March 15, 2016
  • Philosophy will be second semester.
  • Final polishing of Internal assessment this year. (essay)
  • No E’s !!

Extended Essay

  • 1clean copy of your Final draft due in my office by November 16, 2015 (no further revisions by mentors).
  • You and your mentor will reflect on your EE process after they finish grading and reading your final draft.
  • No E’s!
  • All your own work, checked through www.turnitin.com and your mentors review of your work.

  • Meet with me once each semester. Must have a detailed record of experiences to clear the diploma on Managebac.
  • Meet with me at the end to finalize your summary reflection and clear with IB.

Internal assessments and deadlines

    • Due dates established by individual teachers and me. Most will require submission to www.turnitin.com
    • Calendar of due dates will be compiled and shared by the end of September.
    • They are due to IB in March and April so I will be collecting it all before that time.
    • English and second language recordings
      • English will be completed in November
      • World Languages completed in February-March
      • Schedules will be set up in October, you will be notified as soon as we finalize. NO rescheduling!

Malpractice

  • Collusion: How to avoid it…
  • Discuss your work with others, but don’t give anyone a hard copy, and under no circumstances whatsoever give anyone an electronic copy.
  • Plagiarism: How to avoid it…
  • You must reference your sources
  • AND
  • You must make it clear which words are not your own
  • AND
  • No extensive quotes; no very close paraphrasing
  • Both result in no grade for the subject concerned and hence no Diploma for that session

Consequences

  • You may lose the option of receiving the full diploma and being able to test in a subject this May if:
  • ANY internal or external requirements were not completed on time
  • ANY malpractice is discovered (especially after signing the declaration on the coversheet)
  • ANY disregard to the Learner Profile and the Mission of the IB.
  • If this happens there is no refund in the costs of the exams!

Requirements for Achieving the full IB Diploma?

  • At least 24 points overall
  • Grades in all six subjects (no N’s or E’s) plus EE and TOK
  • All CAS requirements met (cleared by me)

  • Not judged by IB guilty of Malpractice.

Individual test schedule

  • IB Schedule
  • Monday 2 May and the last day is Friday May 20

  • .

2016 IB fees/AP fees, registration, refunds

  • IB Fees: $113.00 per exam,
  • $164.00 for registration, if
  • didn’t pay last year.

  • AP fees: $91.00 per exam paid in Spring

Donations

  • We ship IB exams/IA all over the world to be graded.
  • If you would be so inclined as to make a donation equivalent to $40 per exam ($160/4 exams or $200/5 exams or any additional amount you would be willing to donate) it would go a long way toward offsetting the expenses that Troy will incur.
