SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE

Mount Tabor High School

Important Financial Aid Events for Mount Tabor families:

The WS/FCS will hold two Financial Aid Information Meetings at the Education Building, 4801 Bethabara Station Road on January 9th and 23rd at 6 pm.
FAFSA Day is scheduled for February 22, 2014 at sites across North Carolina. Students may register for FAFSA Day at CFNC.org. This is an opportunity to receive immediate assistance in filing your FAFSA. Mount Tabor High School will offer FAFSA assistance on February 22, 2014 also. Parents and students may receive assistance from 9 am to noon on that day. Please contact the Mount Tabor Guidance Office at 703-6728 or stop by to register for the

Mount Tabor FAFSA event.
ALL North Carolina families should review scholarship and financial aid information available at CFNC.org; Click on Pay and then Grants and Scholarships. You will find information about the FAFSA, Need-Based Grants and Scholarships, Merit-Based Grants and Scholarships and Grants and Scholarship Search tools. FORGIVABLE EDUCATION LOANS FOR SERVICE (FELS) provides funding for North Carolina students pursuing programs leading to careers in areas with critical need, such as nursing, teaching, allied health fields and medicine. The FELS application and program information for the 2014-15 academic year will be available in November 2013 at www.CFNC.org/FELS. The priority deadline for submitting the FELS application is April 1, 2014.
Meet college admission and scholarship application deadlines: Carefully read important information at college and university admissions, scholarship and financial aid web sites and follow through. Contact colleges and universities for clarification and talk with your school counselor if you have questions.
LAST REMINDER: Join the Mount Tabor PTSA if you want to be eligible for the PTSA Academic, Arts and Athletic Scholarships. Students must be members of the PTSA to apply, and membership must be obtained by January 1, 2014. Nine scholarships will be awarded by the PTSA. Applications will be available in early spring with the scholarships awarded at the Senior Awards Program in May. Students and parents can access MT PTSA membership information through the PTSA link at the Mount Tabor High School web site (or check in with your counselor).
The Winston-Salem Foundation common scholarship application becomes available on January 1, 2014 with a deadline of April 1, 2014. Students and families may begin researching scholarship opportunities and the application process at www.wsfoundation.org. The following scholarships are only available to Mount Tabor seniors through the Winston-Salem Foundation:

AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM & AXA ACHIEVEMENT COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: High school seniors selected based on ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family and community and ability to succeed in college

Awards: Nationally, a $10,000 winner in every state with ten $25,000 national winners

Locally, every AXA Advisor’s branch office distributes up to twelve $2,000 scholarships

Deadline: December 15, 2013 (Community Scholarship deadline is February 1, 2014, but only the first 10,000 applications are accepted)

WOMEN AND WINE SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: High school senior attending a Forsyth County high school, resident of Forsyth Count, and US citizen; organization with a mission to bring awareness throughout the community about Domestic Violence so essay is about Domestic Violence

Award: $250 scholarship

Deadline: April 11, 2014

NORTH CAROLINA ALPHA DELTA KAPPA INTERNATIONAL HONORARY SORORITY FOR WOMEN EDUCATORS SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Along with the eligibility requirements listed beside each scholarship, these awards are all based on good character and participation in school and community activities



Eunice Riggins Memorial Scholarship (girl in top 10% of class)

Mary Rose Mills-Linda Rankin Memorial Scholarship (girl or boy in top 10% of class)

Clare Johnson Marley-Mary Earle Berger Fine Arts Scholarship (top 20% of class with music, dance, visual arts, or drama talent-proof of talent by the submission of a CD/DVD or portfolio of work)

Awards $2,000 scholarships, non-renewable

Deadline: February 1, 2014 to scholarship chairperson listed or to Mr. Huck (completed applications submitted to Mr. Huck will be picked up by the scholarship chairperson)

AUBREY LEE BROOKS SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Graduating seniors attending high school in one of eleven specific NC counties (including Forsyth) and planning to attend North Carolina State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, or UNC-Greensboro; selection is based on academic merit, service/leadership and financial need (FAFSA filing required by January 31, 2014)

Important Note: The 2014-15 FAFSA cannot be accessed until January 1, 2014 and it must be submitted by the January 31, 2014 deadline. Most students will need to use estimated financial information in order to submit the FAFSA by the deadline. The Brooks foundation will work with the universities to verify the reported financial information later in the term.

MEL HUGHES SCHOLARSHIP (ALLEGACY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION)

Criteria: Student must be a member (or become a member) of Allegacy and a high school senior accepted to attend an accredited postsecondary institution; academic performance (3.0 unweighted gpa), extracurricular and community activities, references and essay (members who apply for this scholarship may also be considered for a scholarship offered by the Carolina’s Foundation General Fund)

Awards: Four $1,300 scholarships for college/university; four $250 scholarships for community/technical schools

Deadline: March 14, 2014

JAGANNATHAN SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: North Carolina seniors who plan to attend one of the 16 constituent institutions of the UNC system on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, extracurricular activities and evidence of leadership (FAFSA must be completed online by February 1, 2014)

Award: One $2,000 scholarship

TOM JOYNER FULL RIDE SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: High school senior in the US who has applied or been accepted into a Historical Black College or University (HBCU) with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and minimum SAT score of 2100 or

ACT of 30.

Award: One full scholarship (tuition, room and board and books)

Deadline: January 17, 2014

THE LADIES AUXILIARY MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART ARLENE ROZA SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Senior female students in Forsyth County that have a relative that received a Purple Heart Medal (resume of high school experience and essay)

Award: One $1,000 scholarship

Deadline: March 30, 2014

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA @ GREENSBORO GUARANTEE SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Scholarship that helps recent NC high school graduates with family incomes at or below the poverty line graduate from UNCG with little or no debt-includes academic resources, professional and leadership development, peer advising and a UNCG mentor

Deadline: APPLY NOW-the number of scholarships is limited

ELON UNIVERSITY WATSON AND ODYSSEY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Criteria: Need-based scholarships awarded to prospective members of the first-year class; students who complete the Watson & Odyssey Scholars Program application will be considered for each of the following applicable scholarship opportunities: the Watson, Eure, Georgeo, MacMahon, and Susan Scholarships (individual descriptions for each)

Awards: Range from $30,000 to $48,000 over four years and include grants up to $4,000 for global study, internships, service, research, or leadership

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS @ MID-ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Two scholarships available to each high school; evidence of Christian character, demonstrated leadership ability and a minimum GPA of 2.5

Awards: $10,000 scholarships; $15,000 to two applying seniors with highest grade point averages of all applicants

Deadline: Not stated, but application fee waived if application submitted by December 31, 2013

COLLEGE AND CONSEVATORY OF THE PERFORMING ARTS NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: AMDA offers over $10 million of scholarship awards each year with individual awards ranging from $1,000 to $18,000 based on talent, merit, academic excellence and financial need. AMDA offers Bachelor of Fine Arts Degrees in ACTING, MUSICAL THEATRE, DANCE THEATRE, and PERFORMING ARTS and two year Conservatory Professional Programs.

HISPANIC LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: High school seniors of Hispanic/Latino origin who plan to further their education at a college, university or community college; must be a present or past Forsyth County, NC ESL student; must demonstrate academic achievement and financial need; recipients must attend Spanish Night on April 26, 2014

Awards: Several Scholarships (last year recipients received $2,000 scholarships)

GE-REAGAN FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Honoring the legacy and character of our nation’s 40th president through college scholarships for exemplary young leaders; exemplary leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship

Awards: Twenty $10,000 renewable scholarships

MEREDITH COLLEGE TEACHING FELLOWS PROGRAM

Criteria: A four-year seminar series in education, cultural enrichment opportunities, a two-year mentor placement in a public school and a scholarship for academically strong young women with interest in becoming teachers

Awards: Partial tuition scholarship with additional financial aid opportunities

Deadline: Apply for admission and complete the Meredith College Teaching Fellows application by January 15, 2014

Criteria: Applicants must be a high school senior and reside in a PHADA member agency owned or managed unit throughout his/her senior year; public housing residents, Section 8 participants or other low-income housing residents are eligible, as long as the agency at which they reside is a PHADA member; student must have a least an overall B average for high school

Awards: Three scholarships ranging from $5000 to $7,000

WILLIAM H. ANDREWS/HOUSING AUTHORITY OF WINSTON-SALEM SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Students must be listed on the lease of the property owned or managed by HAWS; minimum cumulative unweighted gpa of 2.0 at time of application and evidence of community involvement, school activities, or leadership roles

Criteria: Four programs (Asia Scholarship Program, African American Future Achievers, Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources, and Scholars Program); all seniors are eligible for one or more of the programs; financial info required; see specific criteria on application at the website.

Awards: Most scholarships are $1,000

Criteria High School students write an essay on an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION “MOST VALUABLE STUDENT” SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: High school seniors based on SCHOLARSHIP (50%), LEADERSHIP (40%), FINANCIAL NEED and QUALITY OF APPLICATION (10%); successful applicants are usually at or near the top 5% of the class and have SAT scores exceeding 1200 (CR & M) 1200 or similar ACT

Awards: Local, State, and National scholarships (500 four-year awards), ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 per year-six local scholarships (3 male and 3 female) will be awarded

Deadline: December 4, 2013 (Mr. Huck will deliver the applications on that day so plan to submit your application to Guidance by Wednesday, December 5th)

This organization expects and appreciates applications that are neatly completed and placed in a folder with all parts in order. Artifacts can be any form of documentation that supports your accomplishments.
NORTH CAROLINA STATE ELKS ASSOCIATION “NURSING” SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: High school seniors planning to major in Nursing based on SCHOLARSHIP (20%), active participation in STUDENT HEALTH CARE ACTIVIITIES (30%), and FINANCIAL NEED (50%); must plan to attend a North Carolina college or university, must be in top 25% of class

Awards: Three local scholarships of $1, 000 each for one year

Deadline: December 4, 2013 (Mr. Huck will deliver the applications on that day so plan to submit your application to Guidance by Wednesday, December 5th)

Contact: Applications available in MT Guidance Office-carefully follow application directions as presentation of applications materials is very important.
NOTE on ELKS Foundation Scholarships: Following the directions precisely and submitting a very neat application will benefit students who are seeking the endorsement of the local Elks Lodge. You should plan to deliver your completed application to Mr. Huck the week before the deadline for review.
NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION OF VETERANS AFFAIRS SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Funds provide college support to help children of certain disabled, deceased, combat or POW/MIA veterans; students may be eligible for a scholarship if veteran parent was a resident of North Carolina when he or she entered military service

Awards: Several classes of scholarship eligibility

Deadline: March 1, 2014

POINT FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Empowers promising LGBTQ students and leaders to achieve their full academic and leadership potential-despite the obstacles often put before them-to make a significant impact on society

Awards: Several awards with varying amounts

Deadline: Applications available from November 1, 2013 to January 2014

THE NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Provides scholarships to anyone with multiple sclerosis, or anyone who is the child of some with multiple sclerosis, who will be attending an accredited postsecondary school for the first time.

Awards: Range from $1,000 to $3,000, although a limited number may exceed this amount

BIG SUN SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: High school seniors currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community

Award: $500 scholarship

CITIZEN-LEADER SCHOLARSHIPS @ HAMPDEN SYDNEY COLLEGE

Criteria: Any applicant who meets these criteria: Eagle Scout, Boys’ State Participant, or President of Student Government

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION @ NC STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS PROGRAM

Criteria: A limited number of scholarships offered to incoming students based on merit and/or need; students are encouraged to apply for admission to NCSU early since they must be accepted to be invited to apply for a scholarship

CLASSIC SCHOLAR @ THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

Criteria: Non-Georgia residents, providing a waiver of tuition and fees equal to half the differential between in-state and out-of-state costs; minimum 1950 on the SAT (CR + M) or an ACT composite of 29

Awards: $9,105 scholarships per year for four years

Deadline: Submit application for admission by December 15, 2013

THE ROBERTSON SCHOLARS PROGRAM @ UNC-CHAPEL HILL AND DUKE UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Scholars that pursue a range of passions, academic interests, and personal and professional goals; strong applicants demonstrate purposeful leadership intellectual curiosity, strength of character and collaborative spirit

Awards: 36 full merit scholarships (half at each university)

Deadline: Application materials will be available at the web site on October 1, 2013 and the deadline is November 15, 2013

UNIVRSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA @GREENSBORO GUARANTEE PROGRAM

Criteria: An academic program and financial aid package for NC residents that seeks to cover 100% of students need through federal, state, university and private grants and scholarships; minimum combined SAT (CR+M) of 1000 or 21 ACT; completion FAFSA required

CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIP @ WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY

Partial Scholarships with 3.2 weighted GPA, combined SAT of 1000 or ACT composite of 21

Awards: Several full tuition scholarships with book stipend

Criteria: An array of scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen with GPA requirements ranging from 2.5 to 3.25, SAT scores (CR+M) ranging from 850-1100 and ACT scores ranging from 17 to 24

Awards: Scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $10,000

THE ELON FELLOWS PROGRAM @ ELON UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Exceptionally motivated students: Honors Fellows for any major, Elon College Majors in humanities, social sciences and mathematical and natural sciences, Business Fellows, Teaching Fellows, Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows and International Fellows; additional merit-based scholarships available.

Awards: $4,500 to $12,000 per year

RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM

Criteria: African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society; applicants must excel academically, exhibit exemplary leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need

Awards: At least 10 scholarships ($10,000 per year for four years)

Deadline: November 1, 2013 ( for Ron Brown scholarship and application information forwarded to select and limited number of additional scholarship providers); January 9, 2014 for Ron Brown scholarship only (All materials must be submitted together).

GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Criteria: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American students who have significant financial need and demonstrated leadership skills; have attained a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 and enrolling college for the first time as full time students (plan to study computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science)

Awards: One thousand students will be selected

Deadline: January 15, 2014 – Application process includes completion of the Nominator and Recommender forms

REYNOLDA ROTARY CLARENCE “BIG HOUSE” GAINES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
