The summer of 2017 has proven to be the best summer of my life. I have only dreamed of working in the aviation industry, and this internship has really made that dream come true. My mentor, Nicole Tate, has allowed me to go out into the field with an Airfield Security Officer to show me around the airfield. Saying that I was exhilarated would be an understatement of what I actually felt. From covering taxiway checks, to escorting the world’s largest passenger aircraft, I would always be excited about waking up at 4 am so that I can go to the best job in the world. At first, I would go out on ride-alongs with other Airfield Security Officers, then I would update the citations and driver trainings so that the citations can be recorded as closed. It was very interesting because I did not expect there to be so many parking violations that occur on the tarmac by the same company. Also, there is a huge fine for each citation that is given, which came to me as a huge surprise because I would not consider a speed limit violation to produce a $5,000 fine. Before this internship, I would drive almost 2 hours to Millbrae Park to watch the supers (very large airplanes) land and take-off. Just the fact that I get to be within 100 feet of these aircraft really is a dream come true. There are no words that I can say that truly summarizes my experience of seeing my favorite planes taxiing, taking off, and landing.
I am pursuing an aeronautical engineering degree at San Diego State University and this experience has only strengthened my ambition of working in the aviation industry. Being up-close and personal with the planes just remind me of being as excited as a little kid in a candy store. And just to think that I am going to spend the rest of the summer like this, is a priceless feeling that I will never forget. This is the start of a long journey to work in the aviation industry, and being with Airfield Operations and seeing the planes up close for the first time in my life has really strengthened my ambition to become a part of this industry.
