camp housing Chinese earthquake refugees. Gen. Craig was Commanding General of the 9th Corps Area, 1933-

1935 and went on to become Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army immediately prior to World War II.

33751 1766 Virginia P. Hosley Collection Thirty (33) photographs which document the life of Major General Charles Gould Morton from infancy through

his career, his time as a cadet at West Point, his service with the 6th U.S. Infantry Regiment during the Spanish

American War, and his time in command of the 29th Infantry Division during World War I, the Hawaiian

Department directly following the war, and the Ninth Corps Area headquartered at the Presidio of San

Francisco in the early 1920s. The collection also includes one (1 )handwritten note from the Chaplain of the 29th

Infantry Division explaining the gift of a souvenir sandbag from World War I.

1924 this airplane at Crissy Field, 1924. Purdy was an American aviation pioneer, a general officer in the United

States Air Corps & Army Air Forces, and is even given the title of the "nation's first military aviator".

Information. " One (1) 1932 Post Map of Hamilton Air Field which details current construction on the base itself,

as well as the ownership of surrounding lands, which belong to the following parties: the Roman Catholic

Archbishop, the California Packing Company, M. J. Pedrotti, and Julia C. Bodkin.

34963 1766 Lieutenant Herbert J. Simon Scrapbook One (1) 125-page scrapbook of material about Herbert Jerome Simon, an aviator killed during World War I.

Contents follow Lt. Simon from infancy through training with the 13th Aero Squadron in San Diego, Louisiana and

Alabama. The album consists of telegrams, newspaper clippings from local publications, photographs and

correspondence sent to his mother, Bertha, regarding Lt. Simon’s death in France from his family and friends,

peers with whom he served, federal entities and the City of San Francisco. Note: Three objects have been

separated from the collection for preservation purposes: one (1)handkerchief, three (3) flags taken from Lt.

Album Collection military service and his wife’s (Mary Devol) family. During his military career Lieutenant General George H.

Brett was the Commanding General of the Caribbean Defense Command and Major General Acting Chief of the

Army Air Corps, and prior to this, from 1921-1924, LTG Brett, as a Major, was the first commanding officer of

Crissy Field in the Presidio of San Francisco. During this period Brett lived on the Presidio of San Francisco with

his family. Materials date from the 1890’s through 1958. The collection is processed to the item level and there

are no restrictions on access to this collection. However, care should be taken when handling the fragile

and then Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (1964-1969). Topics discussed are include departmental

structure, battle injuries and diseases and their treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, polio epidemic circa 1952,

new and innovative cardiac surgery and equipment, and the Letterman Animal Research Facility.

September 1944; fourteen [14] blank Soldier’s Permanent Pass—Class A forms, WD AGO Form 8, 1 April

1946—one of which is stamped “MINOR”; and two [2] Pacific Greyhound Lines tickets for a trip from South San

Francisco to San Francisco on 25 August 1949, with “Govt. Order HH62” handwritten on the reverse of both. Also

included is one [1] Postage Stamp Register used by the Area Veterinary Detachment, 6002 ASU POC, PSFC from

1947-1948 with four entries: on January 10th, January 30th and February 12th stamps were issued to Private (then

Corporal) Palmer Porter, Area Veterinarian, for travel to “SFQMMC and back”, and on March 30th, 1948 stamps

were issued to Sergeant John T. Cox, Area Veterinarian, for travel to Mission Bay.

photographs which depict U.S. Army involvement in relief efforts following the 1906 earthquake and fire in San

Francisco, one (1) of a refugee encampment at the Presidio of San Francisco, one (1) panorama photo of the Cliff

House and Ocean Beach and one (1) rolled panoramic portrait of the 4th U.S. Cavalry, with which Caspar
