Your Summer Reading Assignment is composed of several parts.
*First, click on the following link for an article on The Rhetorical Situation put together for OWL (Online Writing Lab) at Purdue University. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/625/01/ Read all the sections on Rhetoric (Rhetorical Situations, Elements of Rhetorical Situations, Aristotle’s Rhetorical Situation, Text, Author and Audience, Purposes, Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, and Conclusion) and watch the corresponding videos.
*Then, read Mortimer Adler’s essay entitled How to Mark a Book. Use the information that you learned from the OWL site in order to answer the questions on Adler’s essay.
*Next, read Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel, Brave New World. Concentrate on what the novel is saying, but more importantly, focus on how the novel is saying it. Use Adler’s system of marking up a text as you read in order to really “own” the book.
*Finally, write a 2-3 page essay discussing the rhetorical triangle in relation to Brave New World. Who is the author? Who is the intended audience? What is the “text” or message that the author is presenting? How does the author use ethos, pathos and logos to convey the message? Does he do so effectively? Make sure you have a clear thesis and that your conclusion restates the thesis and answers the “why does this matter?” question. The essay will be due on the first full day of classes.
