Ben’s Courage

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; Courage is also what it takes to sit and listen”- Winston Churchill. This quote is proven to be true by Ben a character in Robb Whites Deathwatch who is a very courageous young man. I will prove this by showing that Ben is able to show courage by being able to stand up and survive even when he is close to death, but he is also able to sit there and listen even when the odds are stacked against him. The ways he shows courage is by standing up for what’s right, not caving to negative peer pressure and not having a fear of failure.

One way Ben shows courage is when he stands up for what is right even if he stands alone and is not afraid to express himself just because some people might disapprove. For example, he is able to stand his ground by insisting on what he know is true and by being able to back up his stories. He does not stop trying to tell the truth about what happened between him and Madec when they were in the desert. Another way he shows his courage is by facing Madec even though Madec has a gun and Ben has a slingshot. The final way he does this is by being able to back up all his stories with the things that he had to do survive in the desert when nobody believes him like when he saw Les get out of the helicopter or how he got so cut up.

Another way when Ben shows courage is when he doesn’t cave into negative peer pressure. For example, he does not cave to Madec’s bribes not to report the prospector’s death. He shows this again when he rejects Madec’s offer for $10,000 when Madec suggests that they you leave the prospector buried in the desert. Even though Madec seems slightly calm, he starts to worry and this is seen by how he offers the money to Ben. “Ben, listen to me I’ll give you ten thousand dollars to stop right here and bury the old man.” Ben’s response to this shows that he has courage because he doesn’t even consider taking the money before he rejects Madec.

The last way Ben shows courage is when his fear of failure does not prevent him from trying things. For example, when he is made to walk across the desert, he finds a dead cactus and uses the old birds’ nests to protect his feet from the desert floor. Another way he shows courage is by trying to gain strength from dead birds that he shot when he was inside the cave. Even though it makes him feel physically sick when he eats the birds “Then and with his eyes shut, gagging, he put it to his mouth and tore the flesh off with his teeth. Close to nausea he did not chew he just swallowed”.

In conclusion, Ben has shown a lot of courage and has stood up for what’s right has taken anything from Madec, and never gave up even when he was close to death. Even though these don’t completely show courage he was able to do them and to quote Winston Churchill - “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; Courage is also what it takes to sit and listen”
